What is FibroScan?
FibroScan is an examination that uses a technology called Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE), a non-invasive test used to assess liver stiffness. The shear wave speed or stiffness may be used as an aid to the clinical management of your liver disease. The result is immediate and shows the evolution of the health of your liver. It is not invasive and it is not painful.
Who should have FibroScan?
If you have viral hepatitis, elevated liver enzymes/liver functions, cirrhosis, chronic liver disease, abnormal liver imaging, alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, liver inflammation, and obesity, you can undergo FibroScan.
What does the FibroScan examination consist of?
You lie on your back, with your right arm raised behind your head. Your technician applies a water-based gel to the skin and places the probe against your skin with slight pressure.
The examination includes 10 or more consecutive measurements made at the same location. The result is delivered at the end of the examination. The provider will interpret your results along with your liver function test.
The entire test will require 10-20 minutes. Patients should wear a blouse or shirt which can be partially unbuttoned to expose their right side above the waist and below the breast bone.
Is it Painful?
No, it is not painful and not invasive.
Can I eat prior to the test?
No food 2-3 hours prior to the test and ok to drink water only.
