
What is an endoscopy?
An endoscopy is a procedure involving a flexible camera that is inserted through the mouth and into the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. During this procedure, your doctor can inspect the oesophagus, the stomach and the first segment of the small intestine.
When is an endoscopy performed?
An endoscopy is performed for a variety of different indications. Some common indications include:
- Difficulty or pain with swallowing
• Abdominal pain or burning
• Persistent acid reflux symptoms
• Unexplained weight loss
• Low blood counts (anemia)
• Celiac disease
• Ulcer disease
• Chronic diarrhoea
• Helicobacter pylori infection
• Early fullness with eating
• Chronic nausea and vomiting
• Black bowel movements or blood in your vomit
How to prepare for an endoscopy?
An endoscopy requires you to perform a complete fast (no solids or liquids) for at least 6-8 hours prior to the examination. Your doctor will provide you with all instructions upon booking your procedure. They will review if you need to stop taking any of your usual medications prior to. What happens during an endoscopy?
Prior to the examination starting, you will receive sedation from an anaesthesiologist so that you are relaxed and comfortable for the procedure. Once asleep, your doctor passes a thin tube with a camera and light on its end into your mouth and down into your oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. During the procedure, your gastroenterologist has the ability to take biopsies, treat ulcers, remove polyps and sample fluids, among other commonly performed therapies
